Ahmedabad, India – Adani Green Energy Limited (AGEL), a prominent player in the renewable energy sector, is taking a significant leap towards sustainability by introducing water-free robotic cleaning systems for solar module maintenance. This innovative approach aims to minimize water consumption, addressing the challenge of water scarcity, especially in arid regions like Rajasthan and Kutch in Gujarat.

Solar energy is recognized as an inexhaustible and renewable resource, contributing significantly to green electricity generation. However, the process of cleaning solar panels is traditionally water-intensive, posing a challenge to the overall sustainability of green energy initiatives.

In a bid to make green energy generation more sustainable, AGEL is focusing on reducing the water footprint associated with its solar portfolio. The deployment of advanced technologies, such as water-free robotic cleaning systems, emerges as a crucial step in achieving this objective.

Robotic Cleaning Technology: A Game-Changer

Currently, AGEL has successfully implemented robotic cleaning technology in approximately 30% of its operational solar and hybrid plants, accounting for 2,070 MW out of 7,043 MW (solar + solar component of hybrid plants). This adoption is expected to save an impressive 283 million litres of water annually, equivalent to the water requirement of around 2.7 million households each year.

Strategic Partnership with Israeli Firm

AGEL is on the verge of finalizing an agreement with an Israeli firm, anticipating an investment of approximately 0.80 million USD. This strategic partnership aims to secure the supply and installation of robots for a 150 MW under-construction site in Phalodi, near Jodhpur. The installation process has already commenced at the hybrid plant in Jaisalmer. However, the company remains tight-lipped regarding specific details of the deal.

Adani Green Energy’s Robotic Endeavors

AGEL has a history of leveraging robotic technology to combat dust accumulation on solar panels and modules. The water-free technology employed by these robots not only proves to be environmentally friendly but also enhances the overall energy output of solar panels. Commitment to Decarbonization Goals

During the recent H1 FY24 earnings announcement, Amit Singh, the CEO of Adani Green Energy, reiterated the company’s commitment to India’s decarbonization goals. Singh stated, “In line with India’s decarbonization goals, we remain committed to delivering in excess of 45 GW by 2030. Adani Green continues to have the largest operating renewable portfolio in India with 8.4 GW capacity. We are ramping up our execution capabilities as we prepare for our next phase of growth.”

Water Positive Certification and Future Plans

In its pursuit of minimizing the water footprint across all operational plants, AGEL achieved the water-positive certification (for plants exceeding 200 MW) from DNV, an independent global assurance agency, in FY23. Looking ahead, the company is poised to invest further in advanced technology to continue reducing water consumption.

Mr. Singh emphasized the company’s commitment to utilizing robotic cleaning to almost eliminate water usage across their plants. He stated, “At AGEL, we understand the importance of our role in mitigating climate change risks. We firmly believe that, apart from delivering returns to our stakeholders, it is a moral imperative for us to build a cleaner planet for our future generations.”
